you've heard of agent eggplant. they're one of the good ones.
your boss, as professional as he might've seemed to others, loved to gossip about his peers. especially when you were his getaway driver trying to focus on the road.
"agent, this one's stubborn," he'd said on one mission, about the chaser. "he's like if agent eggplant were recruited into the wrong side. the same stick up their ass, the same god damn brand of stubborn... don't get me wrong. eggplant's one of the good ones."
he was bleeding all over the backseat of some poor parent's van, leaning over the child safety seat to get a better look at the motorcycle not far behind. he must've been a bit delirious.
all this reminiscing is making you lose focus.

these dusty prisoners

prison is bright. dusty.
a guard stands at the door, overseeing the room. prisoners of varying age and height line the walls. one looks at you intently.
long salt n pepper hair. a black suit. just like the one you were given on your first day at the agency. you ask agent eggplant, "what's the plan?"
they look up at the ceiling. there's nothing up there.
they say, "there is no plan."

you offer an arm wrestle competition with a teenage guard that hates to lose. the conditions: you win, you leave with agent eggplant. you lose, you shut up for the rest of your sentence. the guard laughs in your face and agrees.
it's a swift victory for the guard.
so it's surprising when the guard, two hours later, takes a rare break from typing busily away at their phone and says, "mom wants to see you."

maybe you were secretly hoping that saving agent eggplant would be the first step to bringing the agency back. and the other agents. and the academy that you grew up in. you think agent eggplant had hoped that, too.
the two of you make it out of the immaculate research institute (which is built in an abandoned subway station in the middle of the desert, for some reason) and step into the truck that had been your home for a month.
maybe it's time to look at some real estate. you have no idea where to start.
